2009 in review - by your location unit president Carrie May
I cannot remember a lion of a year like 2009. The year beginning with a supersonic financial nosedive that had many of us wondering are we be looking at the next “Great Depression”. Then to end off with the planned escalation of the war in
Well, I’ll leave the gloomy stories for the newspapers to report on. What I want to do here is highlight the good work the Toronto LEC has been done for its membership this year.
At the top of our list is our very own Glen Guerin, the Director of Health and Safety for CMG Toronto. He is also the first ever recipient of the CMG CBC Branch President's Award. This award was created to recognize those who perform exceptional service to members of the Canadian Media Guild. Glen personifies this.
Jobs as monumental as organizing the CMG’s place in the Toronto Labour Day parade or unpretentious as posting notices to the over 40 bulletin boards in the Broadcast Centre. Glen is always keen to volunteer his time and experience. Always ready to help members with questions and concerns. The
In January CMG and CBC ended a pivotal round of negotiation and signed a collective agreement that will take us to 2014.
The world financial crisis did not leave the CBC untouched. Just like at many other Canadian broadcasters, cutbacks and closings were a fact of life. With almost 200 jobs on the line just here in
Toronto LEC has been hosting meetings in different departments all over the broadcast centre. Answering questions about the reorganizing of news, informing members of what to expect coming out of the redundancy notices issued in May. Our strength comes from our members and we learned just as much as we taught. So, if your department wants to meet with representatives of the CMG Toronto contact us and we’ll set up a meeting. We’ll even bring the coffee. help@cmgtoronto.ca
We continue to offer members free postage for sending off benefit and dental claims. If you need some envelopes in your area contact us at: help@cmgtoronto.ca
www.cmgtoronto.ca had a total makeover this year. Thank you Webmaster Joe. More colourful, easier to navigate and now including new links such as “Grassroots” and the ability to share important info such as a link to donate to the Red Cross for those affected in Haiti. We are working on being the resource destination for members interested in social activism in and outside of the CBC. Got a link that’s relevant? Share it with us. Members who prefer social networking can stay in touch by means of CMG Toronto Location on Facebook and now you can track us on Twitter follow the “Guildtwit”.
Highlighting the diverstity of our workforce continues to be a call to action for the LEC. In ’09 we co-hosted and organized many events. We celebrated Black History month, Aboriginal History month, Gay Pride, Asian History month. These events were all well-attended and appreciated.
In the interest of finding solutions before they become problems CMG hosts mediation meetings. In areas where management and the membership are at loggerheads we go in and offer solutions to keep the work environment friendly and productive. If you feel your area is less then charming and its causing shortfalls in efficiency contact us at help@cmgtoronto.ca
I would like to take a moment to remember our friend and sister Dianne Trottier. Dianne, we miss you so much.
Alas a new year doesn’t mean we slow down. The work continues. CMG is now preparing a workload campaign. Between cutbacks, the reorganizing of news and strains on all traditional media the new millenium is finding fewer members dealing with larger workloads. Compounding this is an expectation that these members be able to understand and work on multiple platforms.
It is vital that we hold breaks, health and safety and an overall work-life balance as a right for our members and all workers in general.
And finally to top it all off your executive is currently in the planning stages for a February 25th local election. So read up and please participate.
So we’ve had a really busy year. We’re still working to make sure you ,our members here in

Be part of the Solution
There are many ways to become actively involved with the Toronto local. There are several permanent committees, such as the Local Grievance Committee; the Joint CMG-Management committee, a forum for resolving ongoing issues and challenges in our workplace; and the local Joint Employment Committee, which helps members who have been declared redundant.
Volunteers can also help with our newsletter - writing or distribution - with planning for the annual Labour Day Parade or the CBC picnic, or work with new members, become departmental stewards, contribute to or help maintain our website.
If you're interested in any of these committees or activities, send an e-mail to help@cmgtoronto.ca.
